Do we need tipsters?

Do we need tipsters?

With so many podcasts, blogs and opinions out there, it’s very difficult to know who to believe or listen to. A lot of people are only looking to promote themselves…there are a lot of big egos in the betting world, and it seems that half the time they just like listening to the sound of their own voice…

As a Betting Coach, I find that the modern-day bettor is looking for real data and real information, without any work or fuss.

There is an extremely popular YouTuber who has made a few points recently that I have decided to investigate a little deeper…

Is there a benefit in using a tipping service?

When a prominent punter says “You don’t need a tipster”, it’s a bit too black and white for me. The main point that they miss here is that there are so many people out there who enjoy betting and want to make regular profit, but they don’t have the vast knowledge (or more importantly the time) to find a selection, work out strike rates, probability, return on investments, analyse jockeys, trainers, draw bias, track bias and so on.

So, the importance of tipsters/people who share real information is becoming increasingly popular because they have done all the leg work – all you have to do is place your bets and watch the profits roll in! The biggest problem now is finding the reliable ones who bring in consistent results and help you realise your potential as a successful bettor.

What’s your favoured Bet Type?

What types of bets are these tipsters offering? Do you want to Back, Lay, Dutch, Trade, Scalp? The betting arena is getting bigger and bigger! Back Betting is of course the most popular and well known and you can throw Dutching in there as well as it stems from the traditional back bet.

I would say that Trading and Scalping require more patience compared to the other bet types due to their time-consuming nature…and then there’s Laying, which requires a completely different mindset all together (not to mention nerves of steel)!

Everyone is different and everyone has varying risk levels, so it’s particularly important to find out where you fit in the betting world. Are you an aggressive punter or do you prefer a more cautious approach? Are you an emotional punter who holds their breath with every bet…?

What should you look for?

When you find a tipster who can provide the bet type you like/one that suits your betting style, you are on the first rung of the ladder. You can now set your bank and staking, with a risk management plan in place.

A good tipster will recommend a staking plan and they will usually be on the side of caution to cover you for a long-term plan. Only you can determine your bank size and how much you can afford to bet with. Then the risk management comes down to the questions I put to you earlier about whether you are an aggressive or cautious punter…

Testimonials are a great way to determine if a tipster is worth following – what’s the point of signing up to something no one will vouch for…? We all know that “followers” on social media can be bought and paid for, so I’m not convinced about using that as a concrete marker of success so perhaps just take that one with a pinch of salt.

It can also be easy to compare one service to another by how much time, money and effort they have invested in their work – do they have a professional website or just a private telegram service? Are they transparent with their results? Are they quoting prices from bookies that no one was able to get, or do they settle to official Betfair Starting Price (BSP)? How long have they been around for?

Anyone can have a great week, but to perform month after month, year after year is some achievement! it’s important to have a plan and give a service time to perform. If you’re aiming to get rich quick, you will just end up back at square one time and time again, doomed to top up your betting accounts forever more!

Do they bet their own tips…?

This one really makes me laugh! Tipsters who say “No I don’t bet my own tips” … you’ve got to be kidding me?! Then why should anyone take your advice or pay for your service?! Where’s your accountability? How can you stand by your information if you’re not using it? Surely you need to be in the trenches with your customers, riding the highs and lows so that you can relate to them, evaluate and improve your work and keep your finger on the pulse?

I’ve been doing this long enough to know that things are always changing. For example, the popularity of sports might reduce or increase thus affecting the markets liquidity.

There are plenty of “winning systems” that are great in theory, but when you try to implement them, they simply don’t work in the real world. For example, over the years I’ve created various winning strategies for both greyhound racing and horse racing, but when I finished paper-trading and started to put real money into Betfair, my bets have actually moved the market and created false prices…! Suffice to say the results were affected, and not in a good way! If you’re not putting your money where your mouth is, you will simply end up being out of touch.

A trap a lot of people tend to fall into is being charmed by the name behind the service – just because they are on a popular betting/sports show, have a blue tick or a famous surname, does not a winning tipster make! It all sounds great at the time and they’re having a laugh as they go, but these people are not putting cold hard cash on their selections and therefore when they lose, it’s no big deal to them because they haven’t lost any money…! They can literally afford to laugh it off and move onto the next bet. The answer lies in their results and if you look closely, you will realise that very few of them are in the black.

Make it happen!

You can win on a regular basis using a respected tipster. Do your research and find winning services that fit your style, and you don’t need to bet on sports you don’t like or don’t understand. When deciding on your favoured bet type, you need to understand what a realistic return is and how the profit arrives so that you can follow the tipping service with confidence, knowing exactly what to expect.
